The dust is beginning to settle in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War and after a record-breaking opening weekend at the box-office, fans are beginning to speculate about future releases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The end of Infinity War left us with no shortage of questions and theorizing that should keep everyone busy for the next 12 months. Looking beyond the currently untitled Avengers 4 (and the upcoming Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel films) Marvel has already announced release dates for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.
GOTG Writer/Director took to Instagram over the weekend to address some fan questions and one answer in particular stood out. When asked “Can I know if Spiderman homecoming sequels or GOTG Vol. 3 set the story after Avengers 3 or literally before Infinity War?” James Gunn responded with a coy, yet telling response.
@jamesgunn “GotG is after. I know the answer to the Spider-Man question, but it’s not my place to say.”
This is interesting for a few different reasons.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR SPOILERS BELOW:
With the character landscape of the MCU shifting so rapidly, it’s clear that we could be looking at a completely different lineup for the Guardians once Avengers 4 is in the books. As far as Spiderman goes, Tom Holland is absolutely killing it as Peter Parker and the events of Infinity War have left his future in the MCU uncertain, to say the least. Could we possibly see a Spider-Man sequel that takes place in the time between Homecoming and Infinity War? It would make a lot of sense from the stand point that Spiderman’s arc in Infinity War took him way out of his comfort zone, and his planet. I would love to see Parker take down a few familiar faces in Spiderman’s rogues gallery (Can we get Alfred Molina back as Doctor Octopus?) in the time leading up to Infinity War would which could give Spidey the much needed crime fighting experience that one needs before taking on The Mad Titan Thanos…in space.
